Shooting a Youth TBall Game
Shooting Youth Tball is a blast. First of all, I have to tell tell you that these kids are ages 5-6 and at most 4ft tall. I, however, am 6ft tall. So, in order to get good shots I have to sit on the ground. Getting the right angle on these kids is one of the most important things. When these little guys put their helmets on and you shoot standing up, all you get is shots of a bunch of mushrooms running around on the field.
I like to position myself along the first base side of the field about halfway between home and first base. From here, I can usually get decent closeups of the catcher, batter and any fielders on the right side of the field. I usually take some closeups of the kids as they are ready to bat and then again when they swing at the ball. After they swing at the ball (if they hit it) I try to capture them running to first base. At this age, you have to follow them and wait for them to either look at you or the base (they have a tendency to watch where they hit the ball instead).
Another thing I like to do with this age group is to position myself in right field just past first base. From this angle I can usually catch the kids running right at me or better yet stepping on first base! I spend at least one inning on the third base side of the field. From here, you catch some interesting stuff at home plate. You can also pickup plays on the left side of the field as well as head on shots of the runners as they are running from second to third base.
You have to pay attention throughout the entire game as these kids will do just about anything. I watched the catcher in this game put his helmet on the ground and dip his head into it. Honestly, this is how he put his helmet on! The most important thing overall is have fun and enjoy the game!
